The 17th annual lecture at the Royal Geographic Society was a huge success, boasting a joint collaboration on their “use of technology in conservation” by Dr Iain Douglas- Hamilton, the Elephant specialist and Dr John “Tico” McNutt from the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust. Both spoke evocatively about how their scientific work with elephants and African wild dog benefitted from technological advances. Dr McNutt currently pioneers work to create a synthetic bio boundary to prevent human-predator conflict in Botswana.

The drinks reception which followed was a great opportunity to meet the speakers and this year, Christmas presents could be bought from various stalls, including Northern Rangeland Trust Trading, an enterprise for women in northern Kenya.

When thinking of endangered species, the dog is the last animal to come to mind – but one type of dog, the African Painted Dog, is indeed are rare find these days. In the last 100 years, it’s estimated that populations have dropped a whopping 99 percent - down to just 3000 remaining dogs. Luckily the Painted Dog Conservation Program (PDCP) is doing its part to help the species come back from the brink of extinction.

The fundraising efforts of Equitix has contributed a generous £100,000 to the Ol Pejeta education programme. These funds have enabled the construction of the Endana secondary school, a mixed day and boarding school. The Endana school is an important centre for learning, as it is the only secondary school that caters to students within a 30km radius of the northern side of Ol Pejeta Conservancy. In partnership with Ol Pejeta, Equitix’s contribution has been used to construct the school’s six classrooms, two water tanks, two latrines and a perimeter fence as well as provide solar power. The latest funds raised by Equitix will be used to build a science laboratory as well as an administrative block and a staff room.

Lord Tim Clement-Jones will be hosting an evening with Space for Giants founder & CEO, Dr Max Graham who will discuss the plight of African elephants and what funds and support are needed to reverse their decline.

The mission of Space for Giants is to secure a future for the largest mammals on earth forever, to be enjoyed by humanity forever, by ensuring that they have the space and security to live and move freely in the wild forever. Based on a decade of applied research and conservation in northern Kenya, Space for Giants has built up a team with the knowledge and capacity to address the current challenges that elephants are facing. But major resources and the support of many friends and partner organisations are needed to enable Space for Giants to fulfill its mission.

The African Elephant is in a race against time. With as many as 35,000 being poached each year – ten percent of the total population of elephants on the continent of Africa – this magnificent species may only have ten years (3650 days) left.

Gustav Manz was a celebrated jewellery designer known for his remarkably life-like animal figures carved in precious metal.  His craftsmanship attracted orders from Tiffany & Co, Black Starr & Frost-Gorham, Cartier, Raymond C. Yard and Shreve Crump & Low, as well as commissions for many artists of the day.  In the late 19th century he designed a beautiful elephant cuff bracelet that his family has decided to remake to help call attention to the plight of the African elephant.

In partnership with the artist’s descendants, Tusk USA is offering a limited edition of the Elephant Bracelet, from which one third of the sales proceeds will be donated to support an end to the ivory trade.

The Iconic Africa event was a great success on Thursday night with over 175 people attending the Allegra La Viola Gallery.  A fantastic collection of work was on show.  

Many thanks to Black Rock and Dom Perignon for their support.  The amount of money raised is not yet known but we are very grateful to all those who attended and made the event such a success.
